Very rare 18th century Maori hook for catching albatross with two high relief manaia heads, with one haliotis shell eye (other 3 shell eyes missing). Polished bone, one inner barb, serrated outer barbs at point. The Maori would venture far out to sea on expeditions to catch the Albatross. a catch of one bird over many days hunting was considered a great reward. The albatross' white feathers and lightweight but strong bones were highly prized. Length 7.9 cm.
