George Reid novelty pottery head bottle, circa 1904. Unknown maker, possibly a workman's piece from one of the brickworks. Reid was a very popular target for caricaturists due to his portly and rotund profile. This piece is only the second example known to our rooms. Rare. 11 cm high

This souvenir came onto the market shortly before Reid departed Australia to become the country's first High Commissioner to London. Australia in Art June 1931. The entire issue is devoted to the political caricatures of George Edmond Finey (1895-1987). Finey was an early to mid-20th century Auckland and Sydney left-wing caricaturist, cartoonist, painter, sculptor and collage artist. Infamous for his bohemian lifestyle, Finey worked for the Labor Daily for three months in 1932, before being dropped for his antagonism towards Jack Lang - one of Finey's major targets.

Political Punching Puppets. Group of four, probably made in the late 1980's. The puppets are caricatures of John Howard, Bob Hawke and Paul Keating (2 examples, one still in original packaging). The label on the Keating puppet shows that they were made in Taiwan Roc. The puppets were originally based on Punch & Judy but later became a popular kid's toy with caricatures of boxers (Muhammad Ali, Rocky, Mr T, Ninja etc) and inevitably, politicians. 26 cm high
