A waka by master carver Wi Te Parihi Mou Paru, Wi Te Parihi Mou Paru, also known as bill Mou (1912-1974) carved this waka as a private commission in the 1960s. A black water river mask, middle Sepik, Papua New Guinea, made from a hessian sack that is supported with sticks that ave been lashed together. The mask has been decorated with black, red, and white paint in geometric repeating triangle patterns. The eyes and mouth are slit openings, and the mouth exposes jagged white teeth.
