A Dogon wooden Shutter, small wooden shutters like this one are found on granaries - narrow mud-brick structures with domed and thatched roofs. In the rocky, barren landscape of Mali the importance of preserving grain was paramount. Though sometimes undecorated, granary doors are often carved in relief with fertility or protective symbols. The two exhibited here show rows of guardian-like figures. Provenance: collection number CC/40873 (Christensen collection), Mali, Africa. Height 89 cm
