A fine Danish sterling silver pitcher 'African Girl', designed by Henning Koppel in 1948, marks for Georg Jensen post 1945, of sculptural abstract form with flared lip, slender neck and full rounded body, with sweeping wirework handle, stamped no. 978, impressed designer and maker's marks to base, 1434 gms, 35 cm high, Literature, Viggo Sten Moller, Henning Koppel, Copenhagen, 1965, p.9, Janet Drucker and William Drucker, Georg Jensen 20th Century Design, Atglen, PA, 2002, p.104, David A.Taylor and Jason W. Lasky, Georg Jensen Holloware: The Silver Fund Collection, New York, 2003, pp 293 and 302 . Compare with a similar example sold Important 20th Century Design, Sotheby's, New York, 15 December 2012, lot 102, Henning Koppel joined Georg Jensen on his return to Denmark after World War II. 'African Girl' was one of his earliest designs in his pursuit for 'the perfect pitcher' and is understood to have presented a huge challenge for the craftsmen creating the beautiful long slender neck reminiscent of the African women who wore neck rings.
