South Australia. Views in Adelaide, Suburbs and Country Districts., Blue Leather photograph album embossed with gilt titles and decorations., Printer: E Spiller, Govt Printer, Adelaide. Provenance: Christie's London, Lord Loch Library, 30 October 1986, The original 52 albumen photographs on printed facing pages (mainly 20 x 26 cm) have been supplemented by 52 examples of the work of Samuel Sweet and other photographers on the opposing pages (these images mainly 20 x 24 and 16 x 21 cm) neatly annotated by hand. Subjects include Group of Natives in Exhibition Grounds, Railway Station Yard, Adelaide, King William Street, South Adelaide, from Montefiore Hill (showing a football match in progress), Whinham Collegiate School, North Adelaide, Home for Incurables, Fullarton, Viaducts with Train, Adelaide and Melbourne Railway, Mount Lofty Railway Station, Camel Waggon, Farina, Telegraph Station, Cape Borda, and many others. (104 images). Probably prepared for the Adelaide Jubilee Exhibition. Notes: Henry Brougham Loch (1827-1900), served in the British military having been involved with campaigns in India, China and the Crimean War. After returning to England in 1880 he was appointed Commissioner of Woods and Forests and Land Revenue before taking the position of Governor of Victoria in 1884. In this role Loch was involved in discussions with Britain on naval affairs and Chinese immigration and was received favourably, having been highly esteemed in contrast to his predecessor, the Marquis of Normanby. A notably successful man in this role, Loch and his wife were very well regarded with their contemporaries and Elizabeth Loch was highly active in philanthropic endeavours. Loch's term as Governor of Victoria ended in 1889 with his appointment to the position of Governor of the Cape Colony and High Commissioner of South Africa.
