Smith was a fighter pilot in World War I becoming a Major in 1917.At the end of the first World War he decided to stay on in the newly formed Army Air Corp, was promoted to commanding officer, Far East. In 1933 at the completion of his posting he returned to England and worked with TE Lawrence on the development of aircraft for the Schneider cup for the RAAF. During The Second World War Air Commodore Smith was Acting officer in command of Number 33 Group then commandant for the ATC HQ for the far North East until his retirement in 1945
