Description:
A rare historical brass inkstand belonging to Capt. Robert Falcon Scott 'And was with him at the South Pole', 19th century cast brass with twin hinged lidded pots, decoratively cast with various scrolling designs, the rectangular body with wide curved side handles and conforming front pen receptacle, one white porcelain liner, a portrait bust of mercury in profile to the front cartouche. An old typed note included detailing 'this inkstand belonged to Capt. Scott and was with him at the South Pole, it was brought back by Mr Pepper, One of Capt. Scott's crew. Mr Pepper was a member of St. Augustine's Church, Petone'. Note: Arthur Neville Pepper was a midshipman on the 'Morning', Scott's relief and supply ship in 1902-04, he died in 1958 in Palmerston North Hospital, it is noted that Mr Pepper spent several years at sea before settling in Australia and subsequently moving to Wellington, New Zealand. A photo reprint of the crew of the 'Morning' during a picnic at Otarama, 21 November 1902 is included with this lot showing Mr A.N. Pepper. Capt. Scott's first expedition to Antarctica, The British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901-04, generally known as the 'Discovery Expedition' launched many Antarctic careers of men who would become leading figures in the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration. 24 x 13 x 11 cm
