War shield Mendi Valley, Southern Highlands Province, this oval type of shield known as worrumbi was the most important type of shield for fighting in the Mendi Valley area. This old and well used shield is carved from hardwood with incised and painted designs with old patina. Provenance: Collected by Todd Barlin in Mendi in 1986. 121 cm x 40 cm
