An Indian bronze dancing figure of Shiva Nataraj, circa 18th/19th century, raised on an oval lotus base his right leg standing on Apasmaru Purusha, the demon of ignorance: backed by open-mouthed makara, the left foot raised symbolic of liberation, and holding a damaru (drum) in his outstretched right hand, representing the five rhythms of manifestation, and the ratna (flaming jewel) in the left outstreched hand, and wearing elaborate jewellery and headdress, 89 cm high. Provenance: Dr. Zerega, London, Private Collection, New South Wales, Private Collection, Sydney . This figure is an iconic image in Hindu art illustrating Shiva performing the Tandava, the dance of bliss which is a pictorial allegory of the true manifestation of eternal energy, creation, destruction, preservation, salvation and illusion, This lot is accompanied by a copy of a letter from John Guy, Deputy Curator, Indian and Southeast Asian Department, V & A, London dated January 1997 to Dr Zerega, provisionally attributing the figure to circa 17th/18th centuries
