Herbert Ponting (1870-1935): 'The Terra Nova at Ross Island', c1911, silver gelatin photograph (59 x 74 cm), with photographer's blindstamp 'H.G.Ponting' at lower right, framed and glazed in original frame, overall 77 x 93 cm. A superb, large format original example of one of Ponting's most important images. Ponting was the first official photographer to be sent to the Antarctic. He joined Scott's Expedition in 1910 and sailed on the 'Terra Nova' on June 15th. He captured some of the most enduring images of the Heroic Age of Antarctic Exploration, and this is one of his classic images. His large works are scarce and highly prized, especially in such fine condition
