A Carnarvon Tracking Station and The Apollo Program Archive In February 1960, the governments of Australia and the United States of America formally agreed to co-operate in space flight programs being conducted by the U.S. Australia undertook to establish and operate a number of tracking stations which would form part of a world-wide network under the control of the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration (Nasa). Carnarvon (W.A.) was officially opened June, 1964. Essie Duncan was employed on the Base and was part of that historic and fascinating time. Essie said, 'It was the highlight of my life.' With her, two of her daughters and her husband, living in a mobile home on the Base but completely isolated from the rest of the world, she was often present when spacecraft passed within range of the equipment and everyone on the Base came to watch the screens. As Essie said 'it was a marvelous way for a family to grow during one of the most interesting times in modern history.' Her role in food service put her in contact with all those at the Carnarvon Tracking Station. This archive comprises the items she collected as mementos of her Australian experience of the American Space Race. A. The Space Connection, A 25th Anniversary Souvenir booklet of the first manned lunar landing and Recognition of the part played by Carnarvon, Western Australia in space research. B. Photo Album, comprising 26 photographs of each of the members of the Apollo landings (many duplicates), a page showing the Apollo manned mission emblems, a pamphlet dedicating the Carnarvon Tracking Station, three letters from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration thanking the Carnarvon Tracking team for their outstanding work on Apollo 16 and 17. Three photographs of the Moon that appear to have been taken from the module window. Two are dated 22 Feb. 1972. C. Carnarvon Tracking Station Pamphlet, explaining the different divisions and their respective jobs. Issued with the compliments of the Department of Supply, Commonwealth of Australia D. Apollo 14, on to the lunar hills. A small pamphlet explaining the mission of Apollo 14. Complete with pictures and a Biography of each of the Astronauts. E. File Folder including the very interesting magazines Nasa Facts, an educational service publication of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. (5). F. Patches And Emblems comprising, patches of Apollo XIII, Apollo II, and the first lunar landing of mankind, U.S.A. 1969. (all in mint condition), also 5 emblems Skylab (2), Apollo 13, 16 and 17. (all mint condition). G. Photographs And Newspapers, including large format (36 x 28 cm) photographs, each of the landings represented (9), 3 newspapers announcing lunar landings. H. Nasa Trackers Reunion (1994) range comprising, Carnarvon Trackers Bottle of Port, Wine Decanter, 8 wine glasses, 8 port glasses all boxed in mint condition. I. Apollo First Day Cover Range comprising Apollo 16 lift off, Apollo 17 lift off, 1972 stamped cover. All with Carnarvon tracking station stickers J. Charm Bracelet, including 7 boxed charms and one Apollo necklace. Three boxed tokens of Apollo 11, Apollo 13 and Apollo 16. All in mint condition. (qty)
