A pair of Derby Mansion House dwarfs, bases inscribed No 227 & 229, circa 1760, 27 & 28 cm high. These models originate from engravings by Jacques Callot of a troupe of performing dwarfs who visited the Medici court in Florence. The term 'Mansion House Dwarf' has a different origin, referring to a Tudor father and son who stood outside the Guildhall in London carrying advertisements in return for a fee (2)
