A rare and impressive size, painted leather black Jack, Bombard. The black Jack dates from circa 16th century, and painted decorated later, likely in the 17th century, with a snuff taking theme illustration, depicting a variety of satirical characters and phrases associated with snuff taking. The base has painted phrase '_ _ _ ike my pipe before the chew and as to snuff that’s all tish shue'. The base underneath has a painted scroll motto with partial letters shown and initials 'R H' in the centre. Height 61 cm
