Wu Changshuo (1844-1927)peony and stone, Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), dated Summer 1921. Hanging scroll ink and colour on paper entitled, inscribed and signed by the artist, with three seals dated summer, xinyou year (1921) 137.8 x 33.7 cm. His work is not a literal depiction from nature, but an arrangement that playfully emphasizes his skillful use of bold calligraphic brushwork against blank space. His works were highly sought after by the new Shanghai urban elite.
