Description:
A large Chinese Wucai-enamelled baluster jar, Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Jiajing mark and of the period (1522-1566). Ody boldly decorated in separated sections, with a floriate border to the neck, followed by a band of latticework with floral cartouches to the shoulder, together with the Jiajing mark, and a lively depiction of scholars, animals and performers at court across the body, bordered to the top and bottom with a lappet of ruyi design, with a number of colourful 'Qilins' chasing flowers to the foot of the jar, 44.5 cm high; 52 cm high with stand catalogue note: the 'Wucai' - five colour technique was one of the last major additions to the rich ornamental designs developed during the Ming dynasty. Despite its name, the number of colors in wucai decoration is not strictly limited to five.
