A Chinese pottery figure of a horse and rider, Tang Dynasty (618-906). Decorated with red and black pigment and patterned designs to the horse and rider, 85 cm high. The result of CityU Professional Services Ltd thermoluminescence test no. 01645 is consistent with the dating of this lot. Catalogue note: According to historical records, the Tang Dynasty Emperor Taizong (598-649), the great warrior, had a great admiration for steeds, and had portraits made of his six favourite ones, each horse's individuality was captured by the naturalistic rendering, poses, facial features and trappings. An edict was passed in 667 AD, that forbade tradesmen and artisans from riding horses, and ruled that only persons of high rank could do so for military and pleasure purposes. Horseriding was a sign of great importance and nobility.
