Dame Nellie Melba's silk parasol With attached label of provenance. 'Presented it to her fellow Australian artist, Armes Beaumont (1842 - 1913) Australia's leading operatic tenor of the Melbourne Princess Theatre fame. Mr Beaumont gave it to his niece Mrs. Elsie Stewart the founder of the Melbourne Gilbert & Sullivan Society. Mrs. Stewart was the stage pianiste of Stanley Brookes- she gave the parasol to Mr Brookes. Mr. Beaumont said homesick Italian miners used to wrap small lumps of gold & diamond rings in hankies and throw them to members of the Italian Opera Co on the stage of the Princess Theatre. He made several of the bits of gold into tie pins.'
