Description:
A large carved Maori wooden sculpture of Rakamaomao by master carver James Rickard. the 'Cloak' is carved in a beak-like pattern while the head is of owl form. This carving tells the story of cult hero Tawhaki who scaled the heavens to consult his tupuna. on his journey Tawhaki noticed the gods using different feathers during certain ceremonies so he asked Rakamaomao's permission to take some of these sacred birds back to earth as gifts for his wife. the huia, Koekoea and the Kotuku were some of the birds brought down to earth. a person who wears the plumes of these birds, in his/her hair becomes synonymous, with rangatiratanga. It is said that Rakamaomao, guardian of sacred birds, was, in fact the parent of these birds. Height 208 cm. Width 63 cm.
