A pair of vulcanite picture frames, French, circa 1870. 26 cm high Note: Vulcanite, also called 'Ebonite,' is moulded not carved and was first patented in 1864. Vulcanite was produced to rival Jet and cheaper to produce than Jet as Vulcanite could be moulded, as opposed to jet being carved. As Jet was the height of fashion but expensive to produce, Vulcanite made objects and jewellery accessible to middle and lower classes. Good Vulcanite pieces are hard to discern from Jet.
