Five framed hand-coloured ornithological Engavings by Dr John Latham (1740-1837) Latham was an English physican and pre-eminent ornithologist of his day. Known as the grandfather of Australian ornithology, he was the first to describe and name a large number of Austalian and New Zealand birds. According to WRB Oliver, both specimens and drawings collected by the Forsters in New Zealand during Cook's second voyage were used by Latham in writing his General Synopsis of birds (1781-85) and the General History of birds (1821-26).
