A magnificent, very large Anton Seuffert parquetry writing slope made of various New Zealand inlaid timbers. The top inlaid with a large fern surrounded by Maori motifs and a geometric band. One of very few pieces known to incorporate Maori motifs which include spirals, manaias, peka pekas and various abstract forms. The sides incorporating traditional Gothic arched panels. The fitted interior includes two glass ink bottles, a lidded compartment, removable pen tray and a small sloped compartment all above a secret long compartment. The slope itself is bordered with a 'Key' motif and has a small brass latch concealing a lower compartment. Black Anton Seuffert label indicating an early pre-1869 date. Size, closed: Length 54 cm.
