Description:
1884 Melbourne Cup - Malua: Pair of cast iron horse's head hitching posts, with brass plaque 'Presented to J.O.Inglis - Malua- Melbourne Cup, 1884'. Very attractive and scarce (also very heavy 80kg each!). [The Ballarat Brewing Company each year from 1875 to 1910 presented the owners of the winning Melbourne Cup horse with one or a pair of these posts. They were made at the Ballarat Iron Foundry, and each post carried a brass plate giving details of the owner, horse and date. It is rare to find a matching pair]. [Malua was the most versatile Australian Thoroughbred racehorse in history, winning over distances ranging from 5 ½ furlongs to 3 ¼ miles (1100 - 5,200 metres). Malua was inducted into the Australian Racing Hall of Fame in 2003, and a memorial to him was erected in October 2009 at the Deloraine Museum, in the town where he was born]
