A Satsuma vase, Meiji period, late 19th century, with Hododa maker's mark and Shimazu family crest, the small baluster vase with a waisted neck raised on a circular foot, having pierced chilong lug handles, decorated all over with two panels of courtly ladies in domestic and landscape settings in a predominantly gold, cream and pink/mauve palette, with brocaded, chevron and palm patterned bands to the sides, neck and base; with a gold on black cartouche underside.
