A Boer war / World War I British army military QSA/KSA and 1915 star trio group to 6723 private Peter Shankland/Peter Kay of the highland light Infantry, court mounted. Medals include: Queen's South Africa medal, with campaign bars 'TRANSVAAL', 'ORANGE FREE STATE' & 'CAPE COLONY'. Named - 6723 PTE. P. SHANKLAND HIGHLAND L.I. Kings South Africa medal, with campaign bars, 'SOUTH AFRICA 1902' & 'SOUTH AFRICA 1901'. Named - 6723 PTE. P. SHANKLAND HIGHLAND L.I. 1914/15 star named - 6723 PTE P. KAY HIGH. L.I. British war medal and Victory medal, named - 6723 PTE. P. KAY H.L.I all medals are correctly named in impressed capitals. Good condition overall, nicely mounted for display. Lot comes with Shanklands/Kay's full service record and medal index card. It does not state why he changed his name for World War I service, but he is confirmed for all his medals, even retaining the exact service number for his World War I service medals. However it is unusual to come across such a name change and one in which the authorities were completely aware of him using his alias! Peter Shankland (Alias Peter Kay - as per his attestation papers clearly show) was born in July 1880 and enlisted for 12 years service on 26th of October 1898 in Hamilton, with the highland light Infantry. He was already serving with the 3rd Bn, H.L. (militia battalion) at the time of enlistment into the regular forces. Served with the 1st and 2nd battalions Africa from 1st November 1899 to 14th February 1903, where he resigned his appointment as a Corporal. Posted back to the UK and transferred to the army reserve in 1905. He re-engaged for a further 5 years in the regular forces in 1910, served France November 1914 until being discharged in November 1915 after completion of his service.
