Many wood-engraved illustrations and illustrated advertisements, (392)pp., folio, publisher's decorated red cloth gilt, minor repair at spine top, tips a little rubbed. Internally excellent. the spas, watering places, seaside hotels &c., are listed alphabetically, each with a description and many with an illustration of the establishment. There are 5 sections, for France, England, Germany, Spain, Italy, the French section by far the fullest, including Belgium and Switzerland. But the bulk of the book, perhaps three-quarters, comprises interspersed advertisements (full page, and half page, a few smaller) the majority illustrated, often elaborately. the range of advertising is enormous, but is mostly for luxury goods such as cosmetics, silver, ceramics, furniture, carriages &c., or for the spas themselves with equipment such as showers, baths, pumps, heaters. the English section, oddly, has several adverts for heavy machinery; Michel, Francisque & Fournier, Edouard [Le livre d'or des metiers]. Histoire des Hotelleries, Cabarets, Hotels garnis, Restaurants et Cafes, et des plus anciennes confreries d'hoteliers, de marchands de vins, de restaurateurs, de limonadiers, etc., etc.-Paris, Librairie Historique, Archeologique et Scientifique de Sere, 1851. Two volumes bound in one. First edition. a few illustrations, (4),348,(6)pp. and (4),410pp., spotted and foxed as usual, often quite severely, due to the poor paper stock. Modern binding to style in 1/4 brown morocco with raised bands, patterned boards, vellum tips.
