A stone of international historical significance, when Sir Edmund Hillary first climbed the summit of Mt Everest on May 29th, 1953, crowning one of man's greatest achievements, he took a small part of the mountain peak with him for his return journey. Eight pieces of stone were collected from the top and distributed to various friends and family. This particular piece was given to Rex Hillary, Sir Ed Hillary's brother, who had it set in a Nepalese brooch. Before Sir Ed Hillary passed away, Rex Hillary had the foresight to get the provenance certified in writing by Sir Ed Hillary in the presence of a solicitor. This certificate, which includes photographs of the Nepalese brooch, is to be passed on to the successful purchaser. The whereabouts of the other stones and whether they have been certified by Sir Ed Hillary is unknown, diameter Of brooch 6 cm, length of stone 2 cm
