SCORESBY, Rev W.: 'Journal of a voyage to Australia and round the world for magnetical research' Edited by Archibald Smith [Longman, Green, Longman & Roberts; London, 1859 1st edition].With portrait frontispiece, folding colour map and tipped in Errata slip; original binding., Scoresby sailed in the 'Royal Charter' to observe the changes in the magnetic state of a large iron ship sailing from northern to southern latitudes. He had commanded several Arctic voyages in the early part of his career before the advent of very large full iron and steel hulled shipping. The expedition was motivated by both scientific curiosity and a concern for the safety of these vessels whose navigational capacity was affected by the hull. The Royal Charter called at Melbourne in April, 1856.
