Convicts in Van Diemen's Land. May 1829 cashier's cheque from the Bank of Van Diemen's Land, signed by James Kelly and made payable to the Estate of John Lakeland. Lakeland had arrived in Hobart in 1814 'with a view of establishing himself in the Colony'. In 1820 he became Principal Superintendent of Convicts in Van Diemen's Land. He died in November 1828 and this cheque is payable to his estate.
