Description:
A very rare and important pre-European Taranaki waka prow, probably made during Captain Cook's New Zealand voyages c. 1760-1790. The most important and historical Taonga treasure that Dunbar Sloane has ever been offered to auction. Named 'Te Tauihu Waka' and carved in the Te Ati AWA carving style from the hapu of Wi Hapi Pakau. This prow was exhibited at and on loan to, the Museum of Te Papa Tongarewa for the exhibition 'Mana Whenua' (Feb 1998-Feb 2003). However the prow was actually lodged with Te Papa on 10th Feb 1960 to 2003, then extended until 2013. Provenance: The vendor's great-great-grandparents were born sometime during the years of 1775-1790. When they secured the waka prow it could have already been 40-50 years old, so accordingly we can speculate its age to be around 1750s onwards. Length 1.32m. Height 45 cm.
