A very rare pair of mid. 19th century Chinese plates, decorated with four panels of figures in Canton famille rose enamels, each panel containing four figures and bordered by heavily gilded flowers and butterflies. The underside with floral scrolls in underglaze blue, each with a six-character Jiaqing seal mark (1796-1820) also in underglaze blue. From a French collection. It is rare to find underglaze blue in conjunction with Canton famille rose and even rarer to find the decoration with a Jiaqing reign mark of the period in our expert's opinion, the Chinese potters probably used an older Jiaqing mark and period blank for the enamel decoration circa 1850 with the gilded medallion and surrounds possibly added in Europe. One plate has a 2.5 cm line on the underside, not extending to the face. Some expected wear to enamels and gilding. Diameter 19.3 cm each
