A rare Doulton Rembrandt Ware Arts & Crafts vase, c.1890, hand painted with a portrait of Oliver Cromwell and a wide band of three galleons under sail with 'Protector of the Commonwealth' painted above the earthenware, blue and golden tones conforming with those used by the renowned artist Rembrandt van Rijn, baluster form. Height 33 cm. Cromwell became one of the most extraordinary politicians in English political history, the galleons depicted reference to the Anglo-Spanish war fought between 1654 and 1660.
