An ivory Balinese Kris hilt, Bali, Indonesia, 19th century. 11 cm high, including stand 16.5 cm high. The hilt is in the form of araksasa (demon) Pratima, superbly carved with intricate detail, with one arm raised behind his back ready to strike. In Hindu mythology raksasaare protective guardian demons that frighten away evil spirits and as in the kris hilt, protect the owner from harm.
