An Australian gold and bloodstone signet ring, by Louis H Suhard & Co, Gawler Place, Adelaide, circa 1905 set with an oval bloodstone intaglio engraved 'The President of the Senate/ Advance Australia' and a knight on horseback before a sunburst marked 'SUHARD / 18C', 18 carat gold. Provenance: The ring is believed to be that of Sir Richard Chaffey Baker (1841-1911). Sir Richard, Adelaide barrister and pastoralist had a successful career in South Australian colonial politics and was one of the founding fathers of Federation. In 1901 he was elected the first President of the Senate in the new Parliament, retiring in 1906 due to ill health
