A Satsuma vase by Matsumoto Hozan, late 19th century of ovoid form surmounted by a narrow waisted mouth, painted on the exterior in coloured enamels and gilding with continuous scenes of figures watching riders competing on horseback in palace grounds, sampans and pavilions in lakeside views, ho-ho birds in flight and flowering plants, all in horizontal bands divided by gilt brocade borders, the base signed in gilding Matsumoto Hozan 25.5 cm
