Jeff Oestreich, soda fired stoneware tea cup, impressed mark, height 11 cm, jeff Oestreich was born in 1947 in St Paul, Minnesota. As a result of his training in England at the Leach Pottery his early pieces were heavily influenced by the austere simplicity of Asian pottery. Although this tradition still underpins his work, particularly in relation to simplicity of form, the pieces in this catalogue have strong visual ties to Art Deco architecture. It was a trip to Napier in New Zealand that was the original source of the development of his mature style. His utilitarian pieces are soda fried with minimal use of coloured glaze and the work is thrown and altered either by faceting, stretching or cutting and re-joining. A highly regarded studio potter, Jeff has exhibited widely throughout the world. Examples of his work are held in the Victoria and Albert museum, the Ichon World ceramic centre, the Smithsonian Renwick Gallery and the Los Angles museum of Art. The fine examples offered in the sale come from the collection of Renton and Rosie Murray who have had a long term working relationship and friendship with Jeff Oestreich.
