Description:
Pair of horseshoes believed to have been worn by Rising Fast during the 1954 Melbourne Cup, aluminium, both stamped 'R Woods Pat. Bolton, Eng.12609 R Fast 4h'; a miniature gold plated Melbourne Cup inscribed 'Melbourne Cup, Won By Rising Fast Winning Trainer I.J. Tucker'; and a letter concerning the provenance from Lynne Tucker, daughter in law of Rising Fast's trainer Ivan Tucker. Provenance: Ivan Tucker, trainer of Rising Fast and thence by descent. Other Notes: the miniature Melbourne Cup was presented to Ivan Tucker's family by the VRC. Rising Fast is considered to be possibly the finest ever handicap stayer to race in Australia. He was purchased for a modest 325 guineas in New Zealand by accountant and first time racehorse owner Lester spring. He had a promising first season as a 3 year old with 4 wins from 8 starts. However, at the Te Awamutu cup the following year he was judged not to have been ridden on his merits, resulting in a ban. Rising Fast was reinstated after an appeal but did not race again in New Zealand. in 1954 Rising Fast became the first horse to win the Caulfield cup, Cox plate and Melbourne Cup in one year. He finished a close 2nd in the Melbourne Cup the following year after winning the Caulfield cup, narrowly missing out on being the first horse to win both races in the same year on two occasions. Rising Fast was inducted into the Australian racing hall of Fame in 2002 and the New Zealand racing hall of Fame in 2008
