Description:
Newton, Sir Isaac (1642-1727), Untitled Tract on the Construction of Equations, in Latin manuscript in an unknown hand, probably written circa 1670, written in a dark sepia ink on 27 numbered pages on 14 leaves, preceded by 2 and followed by 5 blank leaves; original notebook wrappers of a buntpapier type, with faded gold floral decoration on a purple ground; slight wear and small defects to edges of binding, some darkening to paper near edges but in the main in fine original condition, the manuscript, with tissue wrapping inscribed 'In Sir I. Newton's Own Handwriting' and a paper outer wrapping inscribed in a later hand 'W. Miscellaneous Papers. Sir Isaac Newton's Handwriting –&Shy; Receipt Miss Kitchen – &Pound;250 – From W. Dunn' 19 x 14 cm. Other Notes: This is a manuscript of a tract by Sir Isaac Newton probably dating from his third or fourth decade, dealing mathematically with issues regarding the construction of equations and showing him working through a series of geometrical problems, which are neatly illustrated through the manuscript. Contrary to the claims on the wrappers the manuscript is not in Isaac Newton's hand, though it does contain a significant unpublished (until modern times) mathematical study by Newton that he is known to have been working on in the 1670s. a full catalogue description by Mr Scott Mandelbrote of Peterhouse, Cambridge, Editorial Director of the Newton Project is available on request
