Superb whalebone kotiate, finely carved in a formal manner, the beautifully symmetrical blade reflects the work of a master carver the surface holds a soft used patina suggesting good age and use a powerfully resolved manaia form guards the kotiate and its master. Legend has it that a chief carrying such weapon would often challenge the opposing chief to a single combat the first to achieve three blows won the duel and often the war. Found by Henry Walton in the 1800's while bush clearing (milling kauri) in Te Kopuru, Northland. Height 30 cm. Width 12.1 cm
