An early Chinese carved ivory figure depicting a South-West Asian Muslim merchant, the rare figure is carved to follow the natural curve of the tusk, attractively emphasising the subject's tilted head which is expressively carved and detailed with sideburns, a moustache and a small pointed goatee beard, his shaved head is covered by a close fitting skull cap, the figure stands upon a solid tusk section plinth, both the base and figure are slightly yellowed with age and display numerous old age cracks along with some small chips.
