A very rare and important pre-European stone carved Maori stone God sinker (mahe) or Ballast stone with carved double tiki figures. Pre-European 17th/18th century of exceptional quality and superior to those in the British Museum. Some sinkers that are carved had a ceremonial function, they would have sat within the canoe to bring good luck for fishing. These fishing sinkers are extremely rare and their importance is shown by Te Papa putting one on their front cover of ‘Toi Ora: ancestral Maori treasure’ book. height 11 cm. Width 11 cm
