An exceptional quality 18th century Maori wooden God figure (Tekoteko). Stone carved all over (except back of head). Unknown iwi. Provenance: Discovered in Vancouver in a garage sale. Most likely taken to North America by a whaler or a sailor involved in the whaling trade. Many American whaling ships came down to the south Pacific and then returned to the North American coast to continue whaling. Length 43 cm. Width 10.4 cm
