A fine quality satinwood, rosewood and gilt bronze mounted writing table, signed by Charles Meillier & Co London, circa 1850. 77 cm high, 113 cm wide, 62 cm deep, Charles Mellier was born in France and at his height employed some 150 cabinet makers at his London workshops in the middle to end of the 19th century. Born in France himself, he employed many French cabinet makes and like this fine writing table, much of his furniture was in the French style so popular in England., Having furnished the Grosvenor House of Sir James Miller the firm would later supply the Adam furniture for his sumptuous ballroom and drawing room at his house Manderston in Scotland. They also supplied the dining room at Farmleigh, a Guiness home near Dublin now used for Government entertaining., One of Mellier's most famous commission was for the liner The Mauretania built in 1907 whose interiors represented the highest quality materials and skilled craftsmanship that money could buy.
