Attributed to James Wheeler of Bath, (British 1820-1885), Shoeing the Bay Mare unsigned, oil on canvas 90 x 69 cm. Copy after Edwin Landseer's 'Shoeing' 1844. Notes: Landseer specialised in painting animals, particularly dogs and horses, and he was one of Queen Victoria's favourite painters. He also designed the huge lions at the base of Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square. The original picture was commissioned by Jacob Bell who was one of Landseer's most important patrons. It portrays Bell's mare 'Old Betty'. Bell originally wanted Landseer to depict the mare with her foal, however, Landseer repeatedly put off the commission and by the time he was ready to paint 'Old Betty' the foal had outgrown its mother and so the donkey was introduced into the composition
