Inscription reads '[To] Residents of Wellington District'. The sinking of the HMAS Sydney was an unsolved mystery for 66 years. On 19 November 1941, following a battle with the German raider Hsk Kormoran, the light cruiser Sydney disappeared, almost without trace, not to be found until March 2008, off the coast of Western Australia. The loss of the Sydney remains to this day Australia's worst naval disaster
