A George Nelson & Associates bar cart by Herman Miller with an internal fridge. Marshmallow sofas, ball Clocks and the Herman Miller logo: timeless designs from George Miller & Associates have come to define the mid century modern aesthetic. George Nelson was always at the forefront of modern design. His brilliance as a designer, teacher and author were central to the introduction of the European avant-garde into mainstream American culture. In 1947, despite having no experience in designing furniture, Nelson was appointed design director of furniture Company Herman Miller. He was chosen for his profound insights on interior design innovation. Under Nelson's direction Herman Miller collaborated with designers such as Charles Eames, Harry Bertoia, and Isamu Noguchi to produce some of the most iconic furniture of the 20th century. Using the money he earned from Herman Miller, Nelson opened a design Studio in New York city. In 1955 he incorporated it into George Nelson Associates. The Studio bought together some of the best designers of the era and by the 1980's the firm had worked for most of the Fortune 500 companies.
