Trevor Allen OAM. Accolades and honours: From 1946-1949 Trevor played 14 Tests for Australia. On the 1949 tour of New Zealand the Wallabies won 11 of their 12 matches (albeit against a nation without 30 players who were touring South Africa– and upon wining the Second Test Allen had captained the Wallabies in 10 successive matches (a record), with just two losses. Not back considering they beat Scotland, Ireland, England, New Zealand Maori and New Zealand! The New Zealand side while certainly weakened did contain numerous Test players who were denied selection to South Australia due to their racial policy. The New Zealand Rugby Almanac voted him one of the 5 best players in the world. He switched to Rugby League in late 1950 and played 97 times for Leigh in the UK scoring 52 tries. During this time he represented Other Nationalities and the British Empire XIII in international matches. He played 2 seasons with North Sydney Bears 1956-58, the last 2 as captain-coach. In the 1960s and 1970s he was the voice of Rugby on ABC Television. Trevor was inducted into the Sport Australia Hall of Fame on 09 Dec 1986. On 10 June 1991, he was awarded the Order of Australia Medal and on 23 August 2000, he was awarded the Australian Sports Medal for services to rugby union. In 2010, he was honoured in the sixth set of inductees into the Australian Rugby Union Hall of Fame. He was made a life member of the Sydney Cricket Ground and has been honoured there with the instalment of a bronze sculpture of his likeness, and a plaque in the Walk of Honour there commemorates his career. His 1947 Wallaby tour teammate Sir Nicholas Shehadie described him as follows: I doubt that I ever laid eyes on a better defending centre who also excelled in attack. He performed many try-saving tackles, most memorably in our 1948 Test defeat of England at Twickenham. Few better leaders.
