Early mere pounamu - greenstone hand club, a highly valued and important cultural symbol of mana (authority and prestige) as well as an effective weapon during the pre-musket era. Mere of this form are very rare and hard to come by. Stone-tooled with no ridges in the butt. Typical of 17th/18th-century pre-European mere. Mere with decorated ridges are generally from 1700 onwards. Attractive dark-green colour with waves of lighter green. Length 28.2 cm. Width 7.8 cm
