Chiwara - Mali in the superbly stylised form of a female antelope, the chiwara stands upon a rectangular platform which is pierced for attachment to a headdress. Faceted, angular plains form the body and legs., an elongated tubular neck with a leather collar supports the animal's head. The head offers an open mouth with tongue protruding, a pierced nose, inset circular eyes and fine, incised patterning. From the back of the head, ears extend in backswept position framing two carved, elegantly curving horns. Rich, dark-brown patina. Length 32 cm. Width 32 cm.
