Superb kahu kiwi cloak, a rare and beautiful Maori kahu kiwi feather cloak from the 19th century. The cloak is adorned with mature brown kiwi feathers, in orthodox style. The side borders are embellished with kaka and tui feathers. The kiwi feathers are tightly compacted to form plump, luminous appearance. In exceptional condition with only a small amount of loss to the top left corner, which is consistent with usage. From the Wanganui region. Oral family history accounts that the vendor's father received the scar on his nose after he was kidnapped by a Maori tribe up the river, and that he was returned to his father wrapped in this feather cloak.
